Program Description
Recinte Modernista de Sant Pau is a remarkable example of Catalan Modernisme and one of architect Lluís Domènech and Montaner’s most representative works. At the beginning of the 20th century, he developed the idea of a hospital that would support patients not only through medical care, but also through harmonious surroundings, natural light, art and greenery.
The complex consists of 16 pavilions surrounded by peaceful gardens. Rich mosaics, domed ceilings, pastel-coloured walls and multicoloured tiles give the interiors a decorative, almost dreamlike character. Rather than feeling like a conventional hospital, Sant Pau resembles a surreal place of healing.
As you explore the complex, you will pass through spaces designed with patients’ comfort and wellbeing in mind. Domènech and Montaner combined Modernisme architecture with nature, creating an environment intended to support recovery and lift the spirits of those staying at the hospital.
Your visit also includes access to the underground tunnels connecting the individual buildings. This less visible part of Sant Pau reveals how carefully the entire complex was planned and organised.
