Program Description

Discover the lesser-known, historic side of Santorini on an excursion through traditional villages, cultural landmarks and places connected with the island’s rich heritage. The programme combines visits to historic settlements, panoramic viewpoints and a sunset in Oia.

The first stop is the oldest Byzantine church on Santorini, built in the 12th century on the remains of an earlier 6th-century church. Its interior is decorated with remarkable wall paintings, and the church is considered one of the island’s most important religious monuments.

Next, you will visit Mesa Gonia, a village closely linked to Santorini’s long-standing wine-making tradition. It offers a rare opportunity to see how life on the island looked before the devastating earthquake of 1956, as parts of the settlement have retained their historic character.

The excursion then continues to Pyrgos, the former capital of Santorini and one of the island’s most picturesque villages. Walking through its narrow streets, you will discover traditional architecture and the remains of a medieval fortress. From the highest points of the village, you can enjoy wide-ranging views across the island.

The final stop is Oia, renowned for its distinctive architecture, whitewashed houses and dramatic location on the cliffs of western Santorini. It is here that you will watch the sunset over the Aegean Sea.

The order of visits and the programme may change.
