Program Description

On Terceira, nature has a way of surprising you at every turn. Green fields form geometric patterns across the landscape, Atlantic waves crash against ancient lava rocks, and clouds of hot steam rise from the ground. Among these remarkable surroundings, you'll find coastal villages, historic churches and traditions that have been passed down through generations. During your excursion around Terceira, you'll discover the many sides of this Azorean island - from sweeping panoramic views to places that reveal its volcanic origins.

You'll set off from the Angra do Heroísmo area, heading first towards Monte Brasil, a distinctive hill overlooking the town. Your journey will then take you along the eastern coast through the picturesque villages of Ribeirinha, Serretinha and Porto Judeu. You'll stop at Salga Bay and in Porto Martins, where natural pools surrounded by volcanic rocks create a striking coastal landscape.

Your next stop will be Praia da Vitória, a town where history blends with everyday island life. You'll visit the historic Matriz Church before heading to two scenic viewpoints. Serra do Facho offers views over the coastline, while Serra do Cume reveals one of Terceira's most distinctive landscapes - a vast patchwork of green pastures divided by traditional stone walls. The route will also take you to São Sebastião, home to one of the oldest churches on the island. Afterwards, there will be a break for lunch.

In the afternoon, the scenery will change dramatically. At Furnas do Enxofre, you'll see fumaroles - openings in the ground where steam and volcanic gases escape from beneath the Earth's surface. This fascinating natural phenomenon is a reminder of the powerful forces that shaped the Azores and continue to leave their mark on the island today.

Next, you'll visit Biscoitos, a village known for its winemaking heritage and rugged coastline. At the Wine Museum, you'll learn about local traditions of vine cultivation and wine production. Nearby are the famous Biscoitos natural pools, formed among dark volcanic rocks. Their irregular shapes and proximity to the Atlantic reveal the extraordinary landscapes created where lava meets the sea.

Towards the end of the excursion, you'll stop at Lagoa das Patas, a lake surrounded by greenery, offering a peaceful contrast to the rugged coastline explored earlier. Subject to availability, you may also visit the Cinco Ribeiras cheese dairy to discover another aspect of Terceira's culinary heritage. Afterwards, you'll return to your hotel in Angra do Heroísmo.

Terceira is an island shaped by both powerful natural forces and centuries-old local traditions. Ocean panoramas, green pastures, fumaroles and volcanic pools come together with history, local craftsmanship and culture. This journey will show you just how many different landscapes and stories can be found on a single Azorean island.
